  Hello! On behalf of Grenoside Primary School, located in north Sheffield, let me welome you to our weather blog. While the input on this blog is from myself - Mr Vincent, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant working in Key Stage 1, much of the content will be provided by our amazing pupils. This will come through simple pupil voice, observations recorded by them from our on-site Davis weather station as well as photographs and videos of experiments and interesting weather events.

  So, over the coming weeks and months, I hope to fill this blog with all of the above and more, as we strive to add our passion for the elements as a unique selling point for our school. All this endeavour is to be, of course, filtered through the lens of the great British weather, so come along for the ride because as we know... our weather rarely stays the same and hopefully you can keep up with us!

Creating a cloud in a bottle ☁ - Experiment 1

 In February, we started our first STEM Weather club with the Year 2s. It was a great year group to trial this club with as, back in Year 1, our children learn all about the weather in one of our half-term themes. I therefore wanted the club to be open first to Year 2s to add to what they had learned previously and hopefully continue to foster a healthy curiosity and interest in the weather. March 2024.  Our first session was all about clouds, with the club learning about the formation of clouds through a bit of theory, scientific questioning and videos featuring epic timelapses of various cloud types such as cumulus and stratus.  Our experiment was to create a cloud in a bottle. Clouds and precipitation - Experiment 2

 For our second week of experiments, we looked at how clouds precipitate by exploring the water cycle. Cue the messy experiments! First we used cotton wool balls in an empty yoghurt pot (which had been spiked with numerous holes)... the cotton wool balls acted as clouds and, once they'd taken on a certain amount of water, they could hold on no longer!  The real star of the session though was the shaving foam. A messy yet fragrant experiment with the shaving foam being sprayed on top of a glass jar of water, not dissimilar to a coke float!   To get the shaving foam clouds to 'precipitate', we used pipettes and coloured water, adding a few squirts to the top of the foamy clouds. Eventually, we noticed the coloured water would soak through the shaving foam clouds once the foam had reached its saturation point and... it started to 'rain' 🌧  Having coloured water was essential as we could see the exact point when the foam clouds could hold no more!
